January 30 - Tim

In San Jose - La Rose de Americana

We had a good breakfast of fruits and toast and cake at the hotel and then left right away with the private tour guide we had hired for $60 to take us to see the volcano near San Juan.

It was quite an interesting ride up very curvy roads where he passed at will on the left hand side. We never did see the volcano as the clouds had settled in.

On the way back the driver stopped at some beautiful water falls. He brought us to the regional airport for our Sansa flight to Golfito. It was over an hour late and we arrived minus some of our luggage as they randomly selected pieces of luggage to bring the weight down to what this about 19 seater plane could hold.

The luggage is supposed to arrive tomorrow., by air or by truck. It will be interesting to see if it does arrive and if everything is there.

The flight itself was interesting as we were seated directly behind the pilot. Landing at Golfito involves flying towards a mountain range with a sharp left hand turn to the runway. The taxis wait for you at the end of the runway.

After that we took a water taxi ride of about 35 minutes, pretty bumpy. We arrived at a dock where I was beginning to question the accommodations we had chosen. From there however a truck ride brought us to our house. It is very impressive and right on the ocean, the beach is probably 200 feet from our porch. I think tomorrow morning however when the tides come in it will be even closer. The beach itself is awesome, lot of sand and beach for as far as the eye can see. Tomorrow we will be walking the flat sand to see what the tide has bought in.
